User Selection Panel settled

The composition of the ASSEMBLE User Selection Panel (USP) has now been decided.

The panel comrises the following members. They will have their first selection meeting Mid-October 2009 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

First ASSEMBLE workshop - on-site access, new date!

We would like to welcome administrative and technical personnel working at the ASSEMBLE sites, as well as other marine centers, to a workshop on the different aspects of work associated with hosting guest scientists (= on-site access).

Location: the Lovén Centre (Kristineberg + Tjärnö), University of Gothenburg, Sweden (http://www.loven.gu.se/)

Timing: 22-26 of March, 2010 (travelling on the MOnday and Friday)

Costs: 2 ASSEMBLE participants per site pay travel only, additional ASSEMBLE participants and non-ASSEMBLE participants pay also for meals and accommodation.

Registration: send email to Bengt Lundve (bengt.lundve@loven.gu.se) before March 8, 2010.

Monday: Travel to Tjärnö

Tuesday

Introductions
PPT presentation of each marine station (facilities, resources, operational procedures and lot of pictures!)
Short presentation of each participant
Tour of the Tjärnö facilities
Discussions in breakout groups (Administrators, Technicians, Boat crew, Sampling/culturing). Identify routines:

1.       that we do in similar ways,
2.       that we do in different ways and perhaps should stay that way for local reasons.
3.       that we do in different ways but for which we should try to find common ways to do in the future.

Second ASSEMBLE workshop

A workshop on the different aspects of provision of marine models will take place at the Observatoire Océanologique in Banyuls, October 11-14, 2010. Registration deadline, Sept 19!

We would like to welcome technical and scientific personnel working at the ASSEMBLE sites, as well as other marine centers, to a hands-on workshop on the different aspects of provision of marine models including whole multicellular organisms as well as marine protists and animal cell cultures. The workshop will take place at the Observatoire Océanologique in Banyuls October 11-14, 2010. More info will be posted at the Workshops page.

A workshop on long term conservation of marine microbial resources will take place Feb 17-18, 2011 at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, Oban, Scotland. Deadline to register is Jan 21, 2011.

We are currently evaluating the applications. A preliminary result will be sent to the applicants in the end of October.

The 6th call for applications will open in November for research projects taking place from June to November 2012. Read more on the access page.

ASSEMBLE & the biggest virus ever found

Jean-Michel Claverie and his team recently published the discovery of the biggest virus ever found, sampled at ECIM (Las Cruces, Chile) during a stay funded by ASSEMBLE.

This Megavirus chilensis not only has a giant size (0.7um and is visible under a simple light microscope) but also a genome of 1,120 genes, which is more than many bacteria, and econding for trademark cellular functions. This peculiar discovery, which provides important new insights on the evolution of viruses and early eucaryotes, was acheived after the visit to ECIM (Las Cruces, Chile) where the virus was sampled, under the framework of ASSMBLE.

Two new ASSEMBLE workshops

ASSEMBLE announces two new Workshops. One workshop on scientific diving in Oban during the autumn 2012. The other workshop will be on research in protected areas and will be held in Eilat early 2012.

In the frame of Assemble activities, the following 2 topics will be addressed late 2012 and early 2013.

Advancing the use of scientific diving as a valid and cost-effective pan-European research tool, organized by SBR & SAMS, intended location is at SAMS, Oban, Scotland/UK. Proposed timing, 3 days sometimes from mid-September through to early October.

Marine Research in Fragile and/or Protected Ecosystems, organized by IUI, location is at IUI, Eilat, Israel. Proposed timing, 3 days sometimes from late January through to mid-February, 2013.

A workshop on functional genomics will take place May 22 - 23, 2012 at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples. Deadline to register is April 30, 2012.

We would like to welcome technical personnel and more permanently employed scientists working at the ASSEMBLE sites to a workshop on the different aspects of work associated with functional genomics. The WS aims at introducing participants to the molecular, genetic and genomic tools available for the main marine model organisms, focusing primarily on ASSEMBLE models, and is taught by experienced instructors. The registration for the Workshop on functional genomics in Naples has been postponed to April 30.

The workshop will take place between May 22^nd and 23^rd, 2012 at the Zoological Station Anton Dohrn in Naples, Italy,

The WS aims at introducing participants to the molecular, genetic and genomic tools available for the main marine model organisms, focusing primarily on ASSEMBLE models, and is taught by experienced instructors. The WS programme will consist of introductory talks and demonstrations of selected methods. Due to a limited number of 20 places available, priority of attendance will be primarily directed at technical personnel and more permanently employed scientists from ASSEMBLE institutions. A detailed programme will shortly follow, as well as informations concerning registration and accomodation. Registration for ASSEMBLE conference is open!

It is now possible to register and submit abstracts for the ASSEMBLE conference in Olhão, October 23-25, 2012.

The aim of the ASSEMBLE Conference is to highlight scientific outcomes resulting from research carried out in ASSEMBLE Marine Stations through on-site and remote access to marine resources. The needs of users and improvements on this Transnational Access scheme will be discussed, especially in relation to the development of ASSEMBLE into the extended and long-term ESFRI marine infrastructure EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre; www.embrc.eu).
